“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” Psalm 90:1-2
It is a burdensome task in the attempt to fathom the infinite Creator in all of His greatness and brilliancy from eternity past. According to the Holy Scriptures, God always was, always is, and always will be. He is not limited in any way.
The frailty of man is not only represented in the biological fact that he is limited and fully constrained by his own physical body and sinful nature, but he is so inept and independent of God, because of sin, that he does not even realize it. I suppose that if all men saw God and all that He is, then man would universally understand their dilemma before Him and dependence upon Him, falling to their knees.
Among the unregenerate man who has not yet been rescued and ransomed by the Grace of our King Jesus, he is even ignorant of the things that are freely given him in each second that passes his life. Hardness of heart and a fallen nature has attributed to the utmost nonsense of a man’s own independence of God and the lack of acknowledgement of the things He merely upholds with the power of His hand.
“The voice said, ‘Cry out!’ And he said, ‘What shall I cry?’
All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”
Isaiah 40:6-8
Being wrapped in sinful human flesh, with blood flowing through various veins and arteries, and air to our lungs, reminds us that our days our numbered and are indeed, futile. Our blood saturated in sin cannot continue to flow forever and will fade as a blade of grass, cut from the root. The lungs breathing the wretchedness of the fallen earth will wither as a flower in the wind. Our lives are given by a Breath from the Lord and will be taken away by the same (Isaiah 40:24).
“For we have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified. You have set our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of your countenance. For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; We finish our years like a sigh. The days of our lives are seventy years; And if reason by strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow. For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”
Psalm 90:7-10
But, the God of Israel, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of the Universe, will stand forever. He does not wither and does not fade. He does not seek counsel as no one gives Him counsel (Isaiah 40:14). He is infinitely Holy, unsearchable and immeasurable, for all the nations before Him are as nothing as He has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand (Isaiah 40:12-15). Our lives are here and then they are gone, but the Eternality of The Godhead has always been and always will be. The futility and meaninglessness of our lives on this earth melt before the Holy God of the Universe as He stands in complete Sovereignty, dominion and authority, for most of us knowing no different from the time we were brought from our mother’s womb until the time we return to the earth, as dust.
May we “Cry Out!” that all flesh is grass! One day you will see the grass, the next, you will not. One day, you see the flower, the next, you do not! It is the same with the lives of feeble men. One day we are here, the next we are not.
